What Steam is

Steam is a general PC game store and software platform operated by Valve Corporation, whose copyright line sits at the foot of every page. Its own about page calls it a destination for playing, discussing and creating games, and says the store carries nearly 30,000 games "from AAA to indie and everything in-between". It is not an adult-only shop. Adult games are one part of a very large catalog that also holds shooters, racing games, sports titles and management sims, listed on the same storefront as everything else.

For a reader who wants adult games, the useful facts are these. Adult titles are labeled through tags on the game's tile and page, the store runs as a downloadable client with a mobile companion app, purchases are made with a prepaid Steam Wallet or another payment method, and refunds are written into a published policy.

What you find there

The store home page is a rotating storefront. Its sections include Featured and Recommended, Popular New Releases, Top Sellers, Popular Upcoming, Specials, Trending Free and a Discovery Queue, along with a Wishlist, a Points Shop, News and Charts. Each tile shows a game's name, a row of tags, a release date and a price or the word Free. A search page sorts the whole catalog by relevance, release date, name, lowest price, highest price, user reviews or Steam Deck compatibility, and it reports how many titles match. It also notes that some titles were excluded based on the visitor's preferences.

Adult content shows up through tags rather than a separate section. On the home page a horror action game called Clive Barker's Hellraiser: Revival carries the tags Gore, Action, Sexual Content and Horror. In October 2026 the free-games list on the same page held a title called TUNG tagged Hentai, Sexual Content, Nudity and LGBTQ+, with a release date of 6 Oct, 2026. A title called Maid Cafe Simulator carries Simulation, Visual Novel, Shop Keeper and Management. So the store's own vocabulary for adult material includes user-facing tags such as Sexual Content, Nudity and Hentai, and the same tag system also marks plain genres such as Visual Novel, Dating Sim, Female Protagonist and Open World. The tag filter on the search page lists all of these side by side.

A sample game page lists its release date, developer and publisher, the popular user-defined tags, the store's review summary, and a feature row with items such as Single-player and Steam Achievements. There are reviews from players and from curators, a wishlist button and a community with discussions, a Workshop for player-made content and a Market. The about page says the Workshop covers nearly 1,000 supported games.

The store's public pages do not describe an age gate or a mature-content setting. The one trace of filtering is the search page's note that titles are excluded based on the visitor's preferences; in October 2026 it put that number at 31,002 titles.

How buying and playing works

Steam is built around an installed client. As of October 2026 the about page offers Install Steam and says the client supports 28 languages. It lists automatic game updates, controller support for PlayStation, Xbox and Nintendo controllers, Steam Chat, Game Hubs, Steam Broadcast and Early Access as features. A footer note on a game page states that, starting January 1st, 2024, the Steam Client supports only Windows 10 and later. The about page also names the Steam Deck and the Valve Index headset as Valve hardware, and a mobile app for iOS and Android that lets a player reach Steam away from the PC. Each game states its own system requirements and platforms on its own page, so check the page of the specific title.

The mobile page lists the apps in more detail. Steam Mobile is for buying games, protecting the account with Steam Guard, confirming trades and market sales, and receiving notifications, and it lets a user browse the Steam catalog of Windows, Mac and Linux titles from a phone. Steam Link streams games from the user's own computer to another device, with versions offered for Windows, Linux, MacOS and Raspberry Pi as well as phones. Steam Chat is a lighter app for talking with friends and groups.

A purchase needs a Steam account, and the home page shows a Sign in link at the top. A sample game page says to sign in to add an item to the wishlist, follow it or mark it as ignored.

Paying

Steam's subscriber agreement describes the Steam Wallet as a prepaid balance used to order content and services. Funds can be added by credit card, prepaid card, promotional code or any other method Steam accepts. The about page says the storefront supports 100+ payment methods across over 35 currencies. As of October 2026 the store pages showed prices in Swiss francs, and a visible example is Maid Cafe Simulator at CHF 21.36 normally, discounted by 20% to CHF 17.08. Games marked Free show the word Free instead of a price. The agreement also caps deposits and spending: the total stored in the wallet plus the total spent from it may not exceed US$2,000 or the local equivalent in any 24-hour period, a limit Valve says it may change.

Refunds are published on their own page, read here in October 2026. Steam says it will refund nearly any purchase for any reason if the request goes through help.steampowered.com within the return period and, for a game, the title has been played less than 2 hours. The refund page gives the period as 14 days. An approved refund arrives within a week, in Steam Wallet funds or through the original payment method. Games bought before release get the 14-day period counted from the release date, and Early Access playtime counts toward the 2-hour limit. In-game purchases in third-party games are refundable only where the developer has opted in. Wallet funds that were bought on Steam and not used can be refunded within 14 days of purchase. Otherwise the agreement calls wallet funds non-refundable and non-transferable. Downloadable content follows the same 14-day rule as long as it has not been consumed, a bundle is refundable when the combined playtime of its items is under 2 hours, and Valve cannot refund purchases made outside Steam, such as keys or wallet cards bought from third parties.

For developers

The about page, as it read in October 2026, has a Release your Game section that points to Steamworks, which it describes as the set of tools and services that help developers and publishers distribute games on Steam. It names Early Access, the Workshop and Game Hubs as features, and a game page offers a widget-maker that generates HTML a developer can embed on a website to let customers purchase the game on Steam. The pages say nothing about fees, revenue share or review requirements.

Who it suits and its limits

Steam suits a PC player who already uses it, wants adult games sold through the same store, wallet and refund policy as everything else, and values reviews, automatic updates and a Workshop. It is a poor fit for a reader looking for an adult-only catalog with a dedicated browse section, since adult material is mixed in with the whole store and found through tags. The Steam Client requires Windows 10 or later according to the footer note, and the phone apps it describes are for shopping, account security, chat and streaming from a computer. The prices above are Swiss franc figures, and the store supports many other currencies.
