What it is

The Forest of Love is a NSFW furry pixel adventure made by 2 creators who work under the names Carrot and Vixel. It is free, and it runs on Windows, Mac and Linux, in a browser as a WebGL build, and on Android. The makers say plainly that it will not come to iOS because of its NSFW content.

The player is a traveler, a male character the site calls the protagonist, who arrives in a forest full of animal neighbors and gets to know them. The game is built around talking, relationships and a growing cast, and it is released in acts. A reader who wants a free adventure with a large furry cast, drawn in pixel art and released in installments, has the main answer after those opening paragraphs.

How it plays

The setup comes from the game's own site. Long ago the area was a worshipping ground for an Avatar of Lust, and creatures of all sizes traveled great distances to meet there. Over the years the lust and general raunchiness slowed down, and the rumors of the forest became just rumors. The critters who live there stayed frisky, but they are busy with their own lives. The site puts it as "Can't just sleep around all day, right? Got bills to pay, mouths to feed etc." They are still glad to oblige a curious traveler.

That traveler is the player. The site describes the protagonist as a character who will end up in many situations with the animals of the forest, taking on many roles along the way. The main activity is meeting the neighbors and talking with them often. The site says they love to share their experiences and will not skip the details, so conversation is the way the cast and its history come across.

The forest is home to critters big and small, from a big bear to tiny mice and everything in between. The neighbors have a long history with each other. Some are lifelong partners, some have had occasional flings, some have drifted apart, and some have yet to come together. Each has a personality of their own, plus their own interests and kinks, according to the site.

There is also a feedback loop in the premise. As the protagonist goes deeper, the critters are inspired to pursue flings of their own, and the site teases that the player's activities may awaken things in the forest. So the world is meant to change in response to what the player does.

The game is structured in acts. The roadmap page describes a larger plan, and the Collab-Tier page mentions a phase called act 5, which the developers describe as the post-game phase. They say most of the play time should be spent there, because the player can travel the lands, revisit characters and replay scenes, and extra content will be added during that phase. A time leap sits between act 4 and act 5. The roadmap describes that last act as the point where the player has full access to all locations, knows the main cast well and has seen every scene planned for the main storyline, and where characters contributed by supporters are introduced as new critters to meet. The same page says the timeline was being reworked and that delays are to be expected, so the act structure is a plan and not a promise of dates.

The roadmap also says what went into the first act beyond conversation. Act 1 carries all of the game's main systems, and the developers added mini cutscenes, mini games, collectibles and other methods of interaction to it, to map out how those elements would be handled in later acts. The game is built in Unity, which the programmer of the pair took time to learn before the partnership began.

Behind the scenes, the roadmap says work on the game began as a partnership in December 2018, with full production starting in February 2019. Carrot handles art, animation, game design, writing, concept, direction and music, and Vixel handles game design, programming, Unity animation, technical direction and writing. A musician is credited with reworking the music together with Carrot. The site describes the team as a core of 2 that will likely expand as support grows.

Content and themes

The site's own words for the game are NSFW and furry, and its description centers on promiscuous situations between the protagonist and the animals. The kinds of content named are many different kinks, with the protagonist described as receiving and giving across many roles. The tone the developers describe is playful and light, and they say supporters who contribute characters are asked to keep the flavors "light 'n cheery". They also state that there are concepts they will not add to the game.

The art is pixel art. The site has a gallery page for samples and a "Meet the Critters" page for the cast. Themes that run through the premise are romance among neighbors, long histories between couples, flings, and a community that is more interested in each other than in the visitor alone. The forest setting is part of the identity too: the makers say it grew from earlier illustrations of animals together in a forest backdrop.

Platforms and where to get it

The official home is the game's own site at theforestoflove.com. The home page says the game is available on Windows, Mac, Linux and WebGL, and now on Android. It adds that playing in a browser is possible, but the makers ask players to download the game instead for the better experience. The site states the game will not be on iOS.

The home page also carries a prominent link to wishlist the game on Steam, so a Steam page exists, though the site does not say whether the game is sold there or what it costs. The site also links the creators' Itch.io, Patreon and SubscribeStar pages.

The developers run a monthly-build program for supporters through Patreon, described in the next section, but those builds are separate from the public free release.

Price and model

The durable fact is that the game is free to play. The home page says "For free, available on Windows/Mac/Linux/WebGL, and now Android". The work is paid for by supporters instead: the creators say the game is their full-time work and they rely on everyone's support, through Patreon and SubscribeStar.

Supporter tiers all include access to a Discord server, and the support page says supporters also get monthly builds, which the developers warn will be full of bugs and spoilers. They also promise process shots, talks and streamed progress. The page does not list tier prices for these ordinary tiers.

The top tier is different. As of October 2026 the Collab-Tier page describes it as pay-what-you-want and pay-as-you-go, with a minimum of $50 to be in the project. Larger contributions let a supporter work with Carrot to place a character in the game, from a name and portrait in the developers' room, to a temporary visiting critter, to a permanent resident. Higher amounts can pay for a quest line or a scene of their own. The page says this involvement does not affect the main story quest, and that act 5 is where the most flexibility for new characters lies. A notice on the support page, marked 5/1/2021, says the permanent-resident slots are all filled, and the Collab-Tier page points new supporters to visiting critters instead. Payment can be spread over time at the pace the supporter chooses, and the page states that production on a supporter's addition starts only once payment is complete.

Development state and version

In October 2026 the official home page announces "ACT 3 OUT NOW", which is the newest act it names. Act 1 was released to the public in 2020, according to the roadmap page, which also mentions a demo released about a year before that. The page does not give a version number or a release date for act 3, and it does not say when act 4 or act 5 will arrive. The roadmap and the collaboration page both treat Act 4 and Act 5 as work still to come.

The roadmap, as it reads in October 2026, describes a project still in production and paid for by supporters. It says the timeline would be revamped and that it uses question marks on purpose, because the process is mercurial and delays are expected. The makers add that they will be on this game for quite a bit longer than first planned, and that Act 5 will be a large amount of work. The story is not finished.

Who it suits

This is a good fit for an adult who wants a free, story-and-relationship adventure with an animal cast in pixel art, on a desktop, in a browser or on an Android phone, and who is comfortable with explicit furry content. Because it costs nothing to try, the commitment is low. It also suits someone who likes following a game in progress and may want to support the makers.

It is a weaker fit for a player who wants a finished story today. The home page names Act 3 as the newest, the roadmap still lists Acts 4 and 5 as work ahead, and the site says its timeline is not fixed. It is also not for readers who dislike explicit content or furry art, and the site says it will not be on iOS. Players who prefer a polished download experience will want the desktop or Android builds over the browser version, since the makers themselves steer people away from the browser.
